Take, Toss, Trash – How to Make Money and Clean out Your Closet

Does anyone else love this scene in the SATC movie as much as I do? Even if our closets will never be as fabulous as Carrie Bradshaw’s, we can definitely steal a page out of her book with getting rid of last season’s clothes and accessories. So grab a glass of champagne and get ready to sell!

And the Winner Is…

Do I even need to say it? Of course, CLOTHES MENTOR. Before today, I thought Plato’s closet was the only game in town. Well, not anymore. If I were Plato’s Closet, I would sleep with one eye open because Clothes Mentor is definitely doing way more things right. First impressions are everything, and Clothes Mentor gave off a friendly, professional vibe right from the start. Also, Clothes Mentor accepted 25 items compared with only 9 at Plato’s Closet. However, Plato’s does win when it comes to average $ per item (only slightly). This may have been skewed due to the type of items bought at each store, but I will give credit where credit’s due. I would still sell my clothes to Clothes Mentor, because I know I have a better chance of selling more items as well as have a positive interaction with friendly employees.

Online Consignment – Tradesy

Sometimes, you have items you would like to sell that are a bit too high-end for Plato’s Closet or Clothes Mentor like a designer handbag or watch. This is a perfect time to try an online consignment site like Tradesy or Poshmark.

First Impression – App is user friendly, selling process is straightforward.

Pros

  1. Easy to sell items – take pictures and post items right on your smartphone.
  2. You set the price – can lower price whenever you want if item isn’t selling quickly.
  3. Easy process – If you select shipping kit, there is almost zero effort in selling your items.
  4. Get cash quick.

Cons

  1. Cost of the “free”shipping kit is high – When added to your desired selling price, it drives up the price $14, which may turn off some buyers and force you to decrease your selling price if want your item to sell quickly.
  2. Commission fee – Recently increased from 9% to 14.9%. You still make more than you would at a chain like Plato’s, but an almost 5% increase in the commission fee just means less money you take home at the end of the day.
  3. 2.9% cash transfer fee

Brands they Bought

Total Earnings – $252.91

Average $ Earned/Item – $42.15
